# Distance and Directions -Tips and Tricks

#### Introduction to Distance and Directions

4-5 questions related to Distance and Directions are asked in Reasoning section of exams like IBPS PO, IBPS CLERK, SBI, SSC, UPSC and others .Though its share of questions is a little low but if you know how to solve these questions, then you are going to get 4-5 definite marks in no more than 5 minutes.

In this chapter, a successive follow-up of directions is formulated and we are required to ascertain the final direction and the distance between two points. This test is meant to judge our ability to trace and follow and sense the direction correctly.

##### THERE ARE FOUR BASIC AND FOUR SUBORDINATE DIRECTIONS

Direction is the information contained in the relative position of one point with respect to another point without the distance information. While doing Direction questions , we need to keep in mind that the person given in the question should always face in north direction.

**PYTHAGORAS RULE **

According to this theorem, ”The square of Hypotenuse is always equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides of the right angle triangle”.

**H ^{2}= P^{2} + B^{2}**

Here, ABC is a right triangle where ‘r’ is the hypotenuse, ‘q’ is perpendicular and ‘p’ is base.

**r ^{2 }= p^{2} + q^{2}**

While solving questions on directions , it is often asked to find the shortest Distance between any two given points.Such as in the given figure.

- Suppose a person goes from point A to point C and from point C to point B.

- You have to find the shortest distance between point A and point B.
- This is where Pythagoras theorem will be used.

### **Some Tips to use:**

- B is to the north of A.

2.B is to the south of A.

3.B is to the east of A.

4. B is to the west of A.

5.B is to the North East of A.

6. B is to the North West of A.

7.B is to the South East of A.

8. B is to the South West of A.

**Q1.** Abhishek travels 12 km. towards North, then he turns to his right and walks 6 km. He again turns to his right and moves 8 km forward. Now in which direction is he from his starting point?

(1) North (2) South (3) North/East (4) West (5) None of these

**Solution: North/East **

**Q2.** A child is looking for his father. He went 90m in the east before turning to his right. He went 20m before turning to his right again to look his father at his uncle’s place 30m from this point. His father was not there from there he went 100m to the north before meeting his father in a street. How far did the son meet his father from the starting point?

(1) 100m (2) 120m (3) 140m (4) 160m (5) None of these

**Solution: 100 meter**

By Pythagoras theorem;

AB^{2}= AC^{2} + BC^{2}

AB^{2}= (60)^{2}+ (80)^{2}

AB=100m

**Key points to be remembered while doing Distance and Directions:**

- Always remember the basic directions.
- Pythagoras theorem is valid only for a right angle triangle.
- Always approach the question step by step.
- In the End, join the initial and final point to get to know the distance and relative direction.
- If in any of the questions, the relative direction is given.i.e. P is to the north of Q, then you can use the basic directions to get the location of P and Q.
